We now offer the latest in microneedling and PRP (skinpen) services at RiverwalkMD.
What’s PRP & Microneedling: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and microneedling are two popular treatments in the field of aesthetic medicine. They can improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and uneven skin tone. While they can be used separately to address various skin concerns, combining them can enhance their effects and provide even more significant results.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that involves creating tiny punctures in the skin with the help of a small device called a dermaroller (at RiverwalkMD we use SkinPen) or microneedling pen. This process stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, two essential proteins that keep the skin firm and elastic.
What’s PRP: On the other hand, PRP is a treatment that uses the patient's own blood to promote healing and rejuvenation. The process involves extracting a small amount of blood from the patient and then separating the plasma, which is rich in platelets, growth factors, and other healing agents. The PRP is then injected into the targeted area, where it promotes collagen production and accelerates tissue repair.
When combined, PRP and microneedling can provide even more dramatic results. The SkinPen helps create channels that allow the PRP to penetrate deep into the skin, where it can work its magic. The growth factors and other healing agents in the PRP stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.
Additionally, PRP can help speed up the healing process after microneedling. Because PRP contains high concentrations of healing agents, it can reduce inflammation and promote tissue regeneration, allowing the skin to heal faster and minimizing downtime.
Overall, combining PRP and microneedling can provide excellent results for individuals looking to improve the texture, tone, and overall appearance of their skin. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified and experienced provider to determine if this treatment is right for you and to ensure its safe and effective delivery.
A consult is the first step to determine how we can best achieve your goals. The consult is completed by our aesthetics team alongside Dr. Ardila in which we will listen to your concerns to tailor a treatment plan.
PRP and Microneedling is performed by Dr. Ardila, Nurse Diana, & Nurse Kellie at our office.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, a treatment that uses the patient's own blood to promote healing and rejuvenation. PRP is injected into the targeted area after microneedling, where it can penetrate deep into the skin, stimulate collagen production, and accelerate tissue repair. This combination can provide even more dramatic results than using either treatment alone.
At RiverwalkMD we offer options for PRP (platelet rich plasma) and PRFM (Platelt rich fibrin matrix) as an add on to microneedling treatment. Both promote healing, but PRFM Platelet-rich fibrin matrix promotes healing days longer than PRP alone. PRFM is rich in proteins that aid in skin tissue repair and rejuvenation. When applied to the skin after microneedling, PRFM promotes faster healing and improves collagen production.
Treatment for PRP/Microneedling and PRFM typically takes 1 hour from blood draw to treatment, with PRFM depending on the areas you'd like to treat it can sometimes take a bit longer. Additionally we recommend coming in 1 hour before treatment to complete numbing.
At RiverwalkMD for PRP and Microneedling, we recommend 3+ treatments to get maximum results. Researchers have found this to be the recommended number. Depending on how severe your skin condition is, you may need additional PRP therapy sessions more frequently. However, the initial phase of PRP treatment often calls for 3 to 4 sessions separated by 6 to 8 weeks. We often see patients for about 2 sessions each year for maintenance.
