Over time, you may have noticed some loss of definition and volume in your cheeks. You might feel like your smile has lost some of its shape or that you appear older than you actually are.

While loss of volume in the mid-face region is a common side effect of aging as your skin loses elasticity, it doesn’t need to be a feature you live with - Juvederm filler, by Allergan can help rejuvenate and restore facial volume and tone.

The Juvederm collection of fillers by Allergan can help restore natural, youthful volume to your lips, cheeks, under-eyes, and mid-face region.

This treatment is proudly offered by Dr. Ardila at RiverwalkMD Aesthetics - our medical spa in Corona, CA.

What Is Juvederm?

Juvederm consists of synthetic hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers designed to give your skin a natural volume boost. This Juvederm family of fillers we carry at RiverwalkMD includes: Juvuderm Ultra, Juvederm Vollure, Juvederm Volbella, and Juvederm Voluma.

Juvederm is an FDA-approved filler treatment that is specifically formulated to restore volume loss and enhance your natural features. It’s made by the same company, Allergan, that trademarked Botox.

Some of the common areas Dr. Ardila uses fillers are in the cheeks, lips, under-eyes, and midface region. Juvederm specifically, includes lidocaine to ensure your optimal comfort and offers a smooth, natural appearance under the skin thanks to its liquid consistency.

By restoring your facial contours and firming skin in the mid-face region, you can reclaim your younger appearance and regain your confidence in a matter of weeks.

How Does It Compare to Alternative Treatment Options?

In the past, the best way to address loss of volume in the cheeks was a facelift surgery. This procedure, while effective overall, is invasive and requires a significant amount of preparation and recovery time. Today, Juvederm Voluma offers comparable results with a non-invasive, zero-downtime treatment option that has fewer risks and is designed to be long-lasting.

It’s an excellent alternative to surgery for those who wish to see signs of aging reversed in their mid-face region. While there are other dermal filler options available to help build cheek volume, this treatment offers superior smoothness thanks to its consistency. Other fillers may remain granular under the skin or form hard lumps or bumps once injected. These issues can be difficult to address post-injection.

This treatment is easily massaged into the skin by Dr. Ardila, making it easy to achieve the placement you desire. Even better, it has a texture indistinguishable from your natural skin, helping it disappear seamlessly into your skin while adding volume in your target areas.

When Should I Consider Getting Treatment?

This treatment is safe and effective for patients of all ages over 21. Some patients prefer to preemptively address the loss of mid-face volume and others are simply looking to improve their facial harmony.

Filler can help maintain a smooth, youthful appearance with regular treatments and offset any developing signs of aging.

Some patients begin seeking treatment when they notice a visible loss of volume in their cheeks. This treatment is proven to be highly effective at restoring lost volume as well as maintaining desired volume. Depending on your ideal results, you could benefit from beginning Juvederm Voluma treatments today. You should talk to your doctor to discuss the best treatment options for your unique situation.

Treatment Process

Even though this treatment is non-invasive and involves fewer risks than a facelift procedure, it’s crucial to seek the care of an experienced doctor, like Dr. Ardila. His expert oversight ensures that your treatment experience will be positive and will deliver the best results possible. You should feel free to ask your the team at RiverwalkMD any questions you may have during treatment.

Treatment

Before your doctor begins, they may apply or inject an anesthetic to ensure your optimal comfort. The numbing agent included in the HA formula will also help to reduce any discomfort during treatment. Next, your doctor will mark your cheeks and mid-face region to guide the injections and ensure that the volume achieved is symmetrical.

Once you are happy with the planned sites, your doctor will begin injecting the hyaluronic acid with a tiny needle. The HA formula immediately begins to plump the treated areas, allowing your doctor to see results instantly and adjust injections as needed. During injections, you may feel some pressure and mild discomfort, but with skilled placement, this treatment involves far less discomfort than other dermal fillers.

Your appointment will take about 40-60 minutes, depending on the treated areas, and you should be able to see your results instantly. After Dr. Ardila cleans your face, he may massage your skin gently to distribute the treatment evenly before allowing you to return to your normal daily schedule with no downtime required.

Recovery

For the first 2-3 days, you will likely experience some tenderness and light bruising around the injection sites. Your doctor may recommend that you ice the area to reduce discomfort and calm any redness. You may also notice some bumps under the skin, which is normally caused by collection of the hyaluronic acid in one spot. Your doctor can easily massage this area to redistribute the formula during your follow-up appointment.

For the first 2 weeks, avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and sun exposure as your skin heals. You should also avoid wearing any makeup until your doctor approves. Treat your skin gently for the first 1-2 weeks, avoiding exfoliants and any rubbing or pressing of the skin, which could form lumps or bumps under your skin as the dermal filler is disturbed.

Once the HA formula settles into its final position, you should see a complete reduction of any swelling, redness, or bruising. This typically happens within the first 1-2 weeks. If any swelling, itching, or discomfort persists after 1 week, contact your doctor to ensure that your skin is healing normally and that there is no negative reaction to the treatment.

Results

Most patients see complete healing within 2-3 weeks of treatment. As their skin heals, collagen production is stimulated by the presence of the HA formula in the skin, giving an extra boost in volume and smoothing the skin significantly. You should notice that your cheeks are rounder and more defined. Your entire face should appear more youthful and smooth after treatment, and any wrinkles treated should be noticeably faded. If for any reason you wish to undo the process, the HA formula can be safely broken down with a reversing agent in a matter of days.

While the effects of aging are not permanently reversible, this treatment can help maintain your ideal appearance. Most patients find that 1-3 treatments deliver their ideal results, which can last between 8-12 months. Maintenance appointments can be scheduled 1-2 times per year to maintain results. Best of all, the results of treatment will leave you feeling as young as you look, giving you more confidence as you see your face in the mirror each day.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Most patients find initial success with 1-3 treatments, after which point maintenance treatments can be scheduled to help maintain your ideal appearance. Your doctor can help you design a personalized treatment plan to fit your needs and aesthetic goals. This may involve other skin-rejuvenating treatments in combination with regular dermal filler injections to keep your skin healthy and smooth.

Thanks to its synthetic rendering of a natural substance, the hyaluronic acid contained in Juvederm Voluma is safe for most patients and can be injected routinely to maintain volume in the cheeks and mid-face region.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate?

This treatment is considered safe and effective for the majority of patients. It’s FDA-approved for patients over the age of 21 and is safe to use on any skin type with the approval of an experienced doctor. However, you may wish to consult your doctor if you have any known allergies to the ingredients used or if you have hyper-sensitive skin.

Your doctor can recommend alternative treatments in these cases. In addition, pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctors as this treatment may not be ideal for them. You should feel free to ask your doctor whether you’re an ideal candidate during your initial consultation.
